The stock cats are horribly designed. Even without internals, it's detrimental to performance to run the stock cats. It's a huge oval piece of sheet metal welded to a 90 degree iron bend at the bottom and a 45 at the top.

Like I said previously, the stock cats are the problem if you want good sound. You can make it louder by removing/replacing mufflers, but to make it sound better, you need better cats. It makes a world of difference.
