I am looking to replace the leather on my centre armrest and am thinking I may try to delete the cupholder (which I never use) at the same time by sourcing a cheap non-cupholder rest on eBay or from a breaker and then putting the new leather cover on. I need ivory with black stitching, so I'll probably need to order the cover specially.

I am assuming it's a simple swap, but has anyone done this?

 

The swap is straightforward but the catches are different.

The cupholder type has a plastic 'hook' catch but the non cupholder pattern is magnetic.



You'll need the magnetic catch and the spacer shown on the left of the armrest.

Thanks for the heads-up, Graham. Who would have thought the latches were different. Just shows it's advisable to ask before doing ANYTHING on these cars

 

I have to confess I didn't the first time I changed one and couldn't understand why it wouldn't close!

The non cupholder one I have has been in my X300, X308, the last XK8 and fits my current 4.2-S.

You've plenty of scope for finding one because it doesn't have to be from a 4.2 model. The magnetic catch parts are also common across the model ranges.
