Default "Check Engine" - "Engine Fault" - "Poor Vehicle Performance"

Just driven 1300 miles from Florida without a hitch. I went this morning and drove for about 20 minutes and stopped. When I got back in the car and started it I got the "Check Engine" "Engine Fault" & "Poor Vehicle Perfomance" messages on the dash. Also got an amber light that I think means I can still drive with reduced perfromance. Any suggestions as what this may be or what I should do ?

Hi NewJag,

Before the forum can properly dispense its wisdom, you need to find out what diagnostic codes the engine's computer is sending out. There is a connecting plug under the dash, just above your hood release.

If you don't have a code reader, you can take the car to most auto parts stores and ask them to read the codes for you. It just takes a minute or two, and if you write the codes down and post them here, the technical wizards can be much more helpful.

Good luck.

Hi Patrick,
You need to rewind to the top of this thread and read the codes.
If I were you I'd start a new thread listing the codes.
It looks as if the OP here just evaporated.
Let's hope he plugged his OBD reader in the right socket!

+1

This thread petered out in September 2011.

Post your codes in a new thread. Always a good plan to reach for the code reader before the $$.

I purchased a 2003 S-type with 45K miles for $5,000.00 for my daughter. It was a garage queen, pristine, and Florida car. Many reasons why:
1. One can not buy any car with less than 50 K miles for less than $5,000.00,
2. Powerful V6 instead of weakling 4 cylinders
3. Parts are readily, cheap, and shared part with other Ford Vehicles.
4.. S-type started to show up in junk yard monthly. Used parts are super cheap.
5. 2003 and later car has side airbag etc.
6. 16 inch replacement tires are super cheap.
7. Wealth amount of information for DIY repair.
8. S-type has a classic look and does not goes out of style every four years.

I bought the car about a year ago and so far I replaced AF sensor, spark plugs, cam cover gasket, two rear o rings due to vacuum leak, one O2 sensor, rear end links, one bad fuel injector, and replaced all brake rotors and pads. I did upgraded the OEM stereo with a blue tooth USB unit and still maintained audio control of steering wheel.

I would buy another one in a heart beat at this price and at this same condition.
