Default Check Engine Light does not Work

Just purchased a 2001 . Love the car so far..... anyway, went to get NC inspection and found out the Check Engine Light doesnt work. Everything else passed. Does anyone know bulb size. I would like to have one ready when I remove the cluster.

Assuming it is a bulb issue. Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Do they check the check engine light? Probably, since it monitors the emission controls. Catalytic converter failure no doubt trips the check engine light, so that makes it indispensable.

the bulb doesnt light up when you turn the ignition on. It should come on and stay until you start the engine. I was attempting to get it inspected for NC emmisions . Everything else passed. It sated Bulb Failure =MIL

You can still use a code reader/resetter to see if there are any codes/problems.

Where are you located in NC? I'm just east of Raleigh. If you're close by, we can meet, I can show you how to remove the instrument cluster, and we can make a video of it. My other video was accidentally recorded on a low quality setting, so I kinda want to make another video of that.

If you're too far away, click on the link to my youtube videos down below. It shows how to remove the instrument cluster to get to the bulbs. However, I don't recall seeing any sockets for bulbs from the outside of the cluster, other than the ones that illuminate the instruments. The other bulbs might actually be LEDs soldered to the circuit board in the instrument cluster.

Hey, I'm in Greenville. I saw you videos. They are all actually good. I was just assuming it was a bulb. But ,it very well could be LED soldered. I just got the car and tried to get it inspected. Would a new cluster ( Ebay) fix the problem? May be easier than trying to find a loose solder. I dont have a clue.

Thanks
David

I'm sure a new cluster would fix it, but I'm sure they aren't cheap. If it's a bad LED a new one can be soldered in very easily. I've never seen the inside of the instrument cluster. Does anyone here know whether the MIL is an LED or a bulb with a socket?

Common trick I've seen for people selling cars with the MIL on. My money's on the bulb being removed or "cracked".

Thanks

At one time, I drove cars for a wholesaler. One way to cover up a 'Check Engine" Light was (as he described) to perform a "Bulbectomy."

Monster Module has a 1.800 number on the link I provided. Give them a call and see if they can help you out. BBA has an email address that you can use. Give it a try.

Update: the cluster arrived today and w/ the aide of Rev. Sam's video I was able to install w/ ease and it fixed the MIL problem I apologize for calling it a MILF ....guess that's something else.

it did not reset to my mile however.

Thanks for all the input
David
