Default Cleaning a convertible headliner?

Still working on restoring my interior, looking for some ideas on how others have cleaned/scrubbed the inside headliner of the convertible top.
It is in good shape, but it looks as though it has never been cleaned through the life of the car!

Tim, plain old water was , to my surprise, very effective.

for tougher stains many of us, myself included , use brake cleaner . It works great, zero damage done.

it took me a bit to trust brake fluid, but it's ok.

That's good advice, and I agree that brake cleaner would require some "trust".
I'm thinking I should spray some on a cloth and then scrub with it, rather than spray it directly on?
Might risk accidental overspray on a painted surface...

I've sprayed it directly on, but your idea sound great. Only problem is it's volatility, give the rag a shot.

I read in another post somewhere that Jaguar recommends that we should use rubbing alcohol.
I tried a mixture of rubbing alcohol and distilled water and was underwhelmed with the results.

I would worry about the brake cleaner compromising the integrity of the cloth headliner over time.
Has anyone used it over a long period or more than once and what were the results.

I've got to work up my trust factor to give the brake cleaner a shot but it is the knowledge of this forum that has helped me out on numerous occasions.

mine is pretty dirty too. Previous owner was a heavy smoker I was thinking of renting a steam cleaner from the grocery store and having a go.

What is the reaction to the foam, glued behind the liner, when get in contact with brake-cleaner or steam? Will it dissolve the foam even more then the UV did?

before you use solvents, try Stoner Carpet Cleaner. it works very well and is made for fabrics. a moist sponge will help to shampoo the surface after applying.

When I first purchased mine the headliner was also dirty, along with a few stains. I first used a vacuum cleaner to remove dust and loose dirt. Sprayed the fabric with foaming carpet cleaner and rubbed it into the fabric. For the stains I pre-treated them with "Awsome", very effective with grease. Let it dry and vacuumed again. Came out very clean and new looking. Awsome can be purchased at any dollar store

I agree. I used carpet cleaner on the liner and the seat belts. It worked great.
