Default Codes P1642, P1384 & P1797 after heavy rain?

Car was running fine. Went to work, then after work car had trouble starting. After i finally got it startrd it wouldn't idle and then stall. I ended up nursing it home with 1 foot on the brake and 1 on gas. This all comes after heavy rainfall. 2-3 days of it. Not sure if this is relevant or not. Any ideas? CEL is on but its always on. Nothing new there.

Debbie - it would help to have vehicle details so techs can provide accurate assessment of codes for the particular model year (in this case a 1999 XK8)

moisture could be a cause but how old is the battery as weak battery will lead to some weird faults.

In any case,
1384 is a VVT Solenoid fault
When CK ENG MIL is activated (DTC flagged; second trip), ECM:
Sets VVT drive PWM duty cycle to 0 (intake camshaft fully retarded)

Possible Causes
VVT solenoid valve to ECM PWM drive circuit fault

VVT solenoid valve to ECM ground circuit fault

VVT solenoid failure

VVT oil flow fault

VVT / camshaft mechanical failure

1642 is CAN circuit malfunction:

When ECM detects fault:
– Limits throttle to approximately 30%
– Inhibits cruise control

Possible causes: (All CAN data unavailable)
CAN short circuit fault

Control module failure – check for additional flagged DTC(s) to locate control module source

1797 CAN ECM Token message missing:
When fault is detected:

– TCM adopts transmission mechanical limp home mode (4th gear)
– ECM limits engine power

Possible Causes
Other CAN control module CAN related fault(s)

CAN open circuit fault – ECM to TCM

CAN short circuit fault

ECM failure

TCM failure

The ground strap between the bell housing and frame on the passenger side may need to be disconnected and cleaned. It does get wet and may have some corrosion.

A friend with a XK8 had a similar problem after driving in heavy rain and it was due to water getting into the aging electrical connections. Other members have reported problems after pressure washing the engine or just going through a car wash.

Car wasn't really running fine then.

Some or all of your present codes were already there. Delete them all and start again to see which ones reappear.

Only one of those two is correct.

What was the cause of the existing MIL (proper name for CEL)?

Be prepared in case with several faults proper diagnosis is very hard. Tends to be far easier to diagnose and fix one fault at a time.
