Cold Transmission Noise
I am a new owner of a 1998 Jaguar XJ8 L. Love the car, and it runs and handles great. However, there is one thing I notice about it. When the car is cold, and I start out driving it it makes a noise between shifts. The noise does not seem to effect the shifts. There is no slippage, or hardness of the shifting, however it makes sortof a whining sounds just before it shifts. Once the car gets warm and has been driven a few miles, it goes away and shifts perfectly. The car now has about 92K miles on it. Would a transmission service help? What should I do? Thanks for your input.

i got a problem with similare to yours .. when i shift my car to D.. and move slowly i hear a big bang .. at the rear end . or the gear .. i took it to a garage they told me its a problem with the gears !!! i dont think so .. they lied just to open the gear and do an over haul for it .. change everything .. those suckers .. i think the problem was with the electric it doesnt give a good signal to the gear that shifts to D . now am gonna pay 1000$ for those f&c*s .. for fixing it .. i didnt try the car yet .. i dont they will do any good .. i will sell my car now .. ( should've took it to jaguar agent / service center instead ) just trying to save some cash .. NOW I HATE THE CAR.

i think they said .. the jag drivetrain gearbox .. is sealed for life !! why should i add lubricant.
there is no leak !! even . i think its something in the electric. for my case but i was to late to find out .. that . and they already removed my gearbox and changed the clutches new lubi no valve body .

i was saying for "preacher" but for you ... you need a trani overhaul. usual trani failure for a jag ZF 5HP, it is sealed for life but nothing last forever... i wud change the fluid on everything on a jag.. cheap insurance.
How can I check the fluid level. I also do not notice any leakages at all. I cannot see a dipstick. I understand from reading some posts that it is sealed, but has a fill plug. Would it be a good idea to just drain the fluid, and change the filter kit.....and can I do this on my own, or should I get a mechanic to do so. Anyone know how hard it can be to do this. Also, if the tranny is failing, will I get a message on the dash in anyway? Just curious.

Hi preacher. I've just been looking on the forums as I have a whining noise between gears (mainly between 1st and 2nd) - Came across your postings and it's the same as you had. Did you get to the bottom of the problem? I just had new oil put into the transmission box during a routine service and the noise wasn't there before - I appreciate any advice. My car is a '98 XK8 Coupé on 74,000miles.
Thanks
G.

Thanks for the 2cents!!! - It could end up saving me a lot more.... I've owned the car 18 months and paid quite a lots in various bits and pieces - much more than would be paid in the UK (I'm in Spain at the moment). The bill for new bearings on the front was about 2,500 and I just saw a post on here that in the States this can cost about 150$ each corner??......
I've had BMs, Mercs and so on, but there is something about the Jag that sets it apart, it's a fabulous car - at least when it's not being repaired! Thanks again. G

biggest thing is checking it at correct TOT or "transmission oil temperature"
its no big deal from there
start car run it in rev then drive for 10 seconds each
then back into park and raise the car
when fluid reaches temp
30 celsius remove fill plug from r/h side of trans
if no fluid comes out of fill plug
add CORRECT fluid till it starts to come out
wait for fluid stream to trickle from plug and then reinstall plug
make sure you do the final part before TOT reaches 50 celsious
any questions?
