Default Convertible Headlining

Has anyone had this issue? See pictures. Any suggestions how to clean it up?

Haven't seen that before.

Can you tell what kind of dirt it is? Is it oily, dry, dusty? That would have an impact on what you would need to clean it.

I believe the yellow is a foam layer breaking down to dust through ageing and coming through the headlining material. I improved the look of mine with careful vacuuming. Other marks generally clean up via normal cleaning/detailing methods. I think the basic rule is going gently.

Yes, that's what I found it to be too. Now the foam is breaking down, I find that regular vacuuming to stop the buildup with occasional cleaning with carpet cleaner and a damp sponge keeps it looking good.

I've retrimmed my header rails and A pillars and it looks great with the new fabric. I suspect that retrimming the convertible roof will be a whole different story, however.

Agreed, in a coupe the disintegration of the headline backing causes it to detach from the card backing and droop. In a convertible the liner tends not to droop as it is supported by the roof frame but the backing material still turns to dust and shows as apparent staining on the inner material.

Use vacuum tools carefully, the dust can be sucked through the headliner cloth and removed. Fortunately nobody will ever sit in the back seats so it’s only us owners who see and worry about this😀

Thanks to all who have replied. I have used 1001 cleaner and it has improved somewhat. I intend to do it again to see if I can improve it further.
Is the foam that is suggested breaking down on the other side of the roof lining or is it on the underside of the roof itself?

It’s the other side of the roof liner, I believe - it just turns to dust. When I replaced the liner on the header rail, the bloody stuff went everywhere!
