Default Convertible top wont drop

So i hold the button, the rear windows go down, the drivers window makes a noise, and then the car just softly bongs at me.
pressing the button again just results in another bong.
fully opening both front windows, and pressing the button just gives me another bong
i don't hear the pump, latch, or anything else attempting to do anything.

i reset the windows, but the drivers side window doesn't seem right, it never has. It goes up higher than the passenger door, and the window reset did not fix this. the glass sticks up higher than the little black piece where the mirror goes on, it doesn't form a smooth line like on the passenger side.
Also, if i pull the latch, but do not open the door the window just starts going up and down. sometimes it does the whole drop window on opening, but doesn't close it when you shut the door. i did this to fully drop the window one day.

i've seen this recommended to hard reset the electronics, should this be my next step?
should i put the drivers window where i think it should be, or is this not going to do anything?

so i checked the battery volts, and at the battery it's around 12 volts off, and high 13s running, but both numbers change depending on where i measured. at the little block the positive terminal goes to i measured 14volts.

might be worth noting
sometimes pushing the close button the front windows drop, then the rears go up, then the fronts close. sometimes they don't open at all, the rears just come up.
sometimes when i hit the open button again after trying to open the top i can here a slight click in the left rear quarter window.

the top worked fine yesterday, and does not today.
i did drive on the POS LA county calls freeways yesterday, could this have knocked something loose?
i'm almost positive it's a sensor in the windows or something like that. i'm not getting any errors on the dash (other than low washer fluid)

sorry to double, then triple post, i read this, and it suggests that the front windows are meant to open before the top goes down. the driver window moves a little, the passenger window does not move at all when pressing the open button.

when outside the car turning the key to open the top all the windows drop together, but the top itself doesn't do anything.

1) you are holding the roof open switch down right? Want to be sure you are not releasing it.

2 key in door windows all drop. This is normal.

3) roof closed, windows closed. Push and hold roof down button. Front windows are supposed to trip about 1/2 inch.

Seemed like you may have had questions about above.

Now it sounds like you can't get roof to open.

Car is started right?

Is valve on pump closed? Screwed in clockwise snugy.

There is fluid in resiviour for roof pump right? There is a full Mark on the resiviour.

Just getting aligned. We 'll figure it out.

The driver side drops about that, the passenger side does not do anything after the rear quarter windows drop.

Drop the passenger window and hold until you hear a click, then raise and hold again until click. Then try top. Passenger window may have needed reset.

Both doors closed, no door open indicators.

tried it this morning, and both windows did drop a little like i they're supposed to.
could the latch mechanism be the problem here?

Yes it could. Release the latch manually and see if it goes down. If there is not enough fluid you could get air in the line.

See if this helps you to better understand what takes place and when, when you operate the roof.

I may have missed it but what year is your XK8? And, what color is the hydraulic fluid in the pump reservoir?
