Coolant Question
My car, a 2000 xk8, (within 1000 miles, had it's cam timing set0, yesterday indicated the coolant level was low when I drove down a rather steep hill. At the bottom of this hill, the light went off. The temp gauge never went past 1/2. When I got home, after waiting for it to cool down, I checked the coolant level and found it to be low. I filled it to the bottom of the filler neck, with distilled water. The light has not turned on since. However, today, when I arrived home, I heard rather loud gurggerling [sic] coming from the engine compartment. I check the water level and found it full. Water was dripping from under the car, but I assumed it was from the AC which was on. It didn't smell like antifreeze. When I squeezed the large water hoses, and water poured out of the coolant filler, indicating, there was no blockage (or so I hoped).
I'm wondering if anyone has idea if it's something I should have checked-out or if there's anything else I can do?
Thanks

The sensors in the expansion tank are notorious for giving false readings and the stock temp gauge is a glorified idiot light. However, the hill sounds more like the issue. If it has gone off and stayed off, then just check fluid level for a few days and call it done.
The gurgling noise might be as simple as coolant moving from expansion tank to overflow tank. Overflow goes to reservoir when hot and flows back into tank when cooled down. If you were somewhat low, it might be audible when this happens.
I'd just keep an eye on the coolant level for now unless lights come on again, assuming no leaks or antifreeze smell.

Keep checking but I think all might be ok
Perhaps it's just a little air left in the system after timing chain replacement that took a little while to find it way to the tank.
The smell of coolant seems amazingly permiating .If you think you can smell it then bet your life there probably is a leak no matter how small, smell nothing, probably not
Kind regards al
