In the long run, I'd advise changing the tank. Unless otherwise noted, they come with the cap and sensor, so you're all set.

These are known problem areas, so bite the bullet and get the full tank setup. Change it once and done. Buying piece by piece is more expensive.

These are not hard to source. Check all the usual suppliers and expect to pay ~$150 USD.

I agree with Jag #4. I tied to repair the weeping leak at the sensor site and it was a waste of time. I replaced mine 18 mo ago with a new one and I am glad I did.

When I had my 2001 XK8 fixed, my mechanic's comment was "I've just bought the most expensive expansion tank in the world".

Keep the "new" Coolant Level Sensor from your old Expansion Tank as a spare - they do fail more often than the Tanks.

AFAIK, there are no aftermarket suppliers for the tank. They are all from the same manufacturer.

Word of advice when fitting the new tank: Be very careful when disconnecting the pipe from the tank to the thermostat housing. The plastic section becomes very brittle and is likely to break if you flex it when removing the pipe from the tank. Either be very gentle, or be prepared with a length of replacement hose (most people replace the hose with ordinary coolant hose from any motor factor rather than the original plastic/rubber combination hose).

Good luck.

What about the Jaguar Hose Clamps? My Jaguar XK8 has some odd clamps that I have never seen before. About 1/2 inch (12 mm) wide with a portion that is folded back and forth several times. I don't want to mess with them without understanding how they work. How do you remove them? Can they be reused?
Thanks, John

Yes the clamp can be reused. As for removing the clamp they can at times be a little difficult because of positioning. Much easier with the proper tool but can be done with dads old pliers.

Tool Link Sears.com

Why are you replacing the tank? Is it leaking?

Gus, Thanks for that information. I still don't see how it all works and I have never seen a tool like that. I will start another thread for my problem regarding a coolant leak.
