coolant tank

Cool coolant tank

need to replace the expansion coolant tank on a 2001 xk8 any ideas on where i can purchase a tank at a good price. already changed sensor. should i try the cap next or just go for the tank.? thanks tony

In the long run, I'd advise changing the tank. Unless otherwise noted, they come with the cap and sensor, so you're all set.

These are known problem areas, so bite the bullet and get the full tank setup. Change it once and done. Buying piece by piece is more expensive.

These are not hard to source. Check all the usual suppliers and expect to pay ~$150 USD.

I agree with Jag #4. I tied to repair the weeping leak at the sensor site and it was a waste of time. I replaced mine 18 mo ago with a new one and I am glad I did.

When I had my 2001 XK8 fixed, my mechanic's comment was "I've just bought the most expensive expansion tank in the world".

thanks jag#4 think the tank is next.. see on ebay for around 137.00 from british parts place

thanks.... just hope i can do it right the first time and it works...hate looking at that coolant light.... will order tomorrow

Keep the "new" Coolant Level Sensor from your old Expansion Tank as a spare - they do fail more often than the Tanks.

will do GGG... jaguar has exp.tanks for 160.00 with tax think i should go to them or by on line for 137.00............. would it be better to go to jag for the few extra dollars...... are there parts better or the same ???

AFAIK, there are no aftermarket suppliers for the tank. They are all from the same manufacturer.

thanks, i went with jagbits (gary) shipping today should have in about 3 days...........let ya know what happens when i install it...jagbits & sng were around the same price, i mentioned the forum too.. paid $144.89

Word of advice when fitting the new tank: Be very careful when disconnecting the pipe from the tank to the thermostat housing. The plastic section becomes very brittle and is likely to break if you flex it when removing the pipe from the tank. Either be very gentle, or be prepared with a length of replacement hose (most people replace the hose with ordinary coolant hose from any motor factor rather than the original plastic/rubber combination hose).

What about the Jaguar Hose Clamps? My Jaguar XK8 has some odd clamps that I have never seen before. About 1/2 inch (12 mm) wide with a portion that is folded back and forth several times. I don't want to mess with them without understanding how they work. How do you remove them? Can they be reused?

Yes the clamp can be reused. As for removing the clamp they can at times be a little difficult because of positioning. Much easier with the proper tool but can be done with dads old pliers.

Gus, Thanks for that information. I still don't see how it all works and I have never seen a tool like that. I will start another thread for my problem regarding a coolant leak.

hi forum , today i did my coolant tank and it was pretty much of a breeze. took my time ( 1/2 hr. to 45 min.) and my light is finally out. just hope it stays that way............... thanks to everybody for their advice........ tony
