Cover for upper stop light
I would like to repaint the cover to the upper stop light mounted on the trunk lid of my 2002 XK8 convertible. It feels as though it could be removed but I dare not force it off in case I break it. Is there a simple way of unclipping it from the light? I could paint it in place but it would be easier if I could remove it.
This is a great community and I have learned a great deal about these cars so thanks to all the contributors.

The Parts Manual shows the cover for the High Mounted Stop Light is available thus confirming it must detach:
JTIS doesn't give any information on dismantling the assembly other than to confirm the light is an LED unit for which bulbs are not available separately.
For a unit exposed to the elements, the cover must be waterproof which suggests it won't simply clip on. I'd expect screws going up through the base and into the cover and probably a rubber gasket or silicone sealant involved in the assembly.
Given the cost, the only safe way to investigate this would be to remove the assembly from the vehicle.
A roll of masking tape and repainting in place begins to look a lot more attractive.
