crankshaft setting plug
#2
The tool is contained in this kit. The one that fit my car was in the lower right corner.
Disconnect the battery and remove all spark plugs. Locate the squarish curved black rubber plug behind the oil pan and remove it with a couple screwdrivers. You can then see the flexplate and one of the square holes in the flexplate isn't quite square. It fits the tool. Remove the crankshaft sensor, which is very close to the rubber plug. The tool will be inserted in the hole for the crankshaft sensor. Rotate the engine by putting a socket and breaker bar on the crankshaft bolt and rotating clockwise as viewed from the front looking aft. When the correct hole in the flexplate is aligned with the hole that held the crankshaft sensor, insert the tool and secure it with the bolt. I did move the flexplate a little bit with a screwdriver for final alignment of the holes. It helps to have two people for this, one turning the bolt and one watching the holes in the flexplate, but I did it alone. It just takes longer. Just to be safe, I only rotated the crankshaft bolt clockwise. If I missed the hole, I went around again.
Hint: If you have the cam covers off, the crankshaft will be in the proper position when the flats on the cams are aligned in the same plane so when the cam flats are getting close to being aligned, slow down and move the crankshaft in VERY small increments.
This tool is used ONLY for locating the crankshaft position for timing the engine. It is NOT a locking device for the crankshaft and must NEVER be used for crankshaft bolt removal. There is another tool for that which works well.
