Default s-type 4.0 crankshaft setting peg

I am working on an out of time 4.0 from 2001 s-type i recently recieved the timing tool kit and I can't seem to get the setting peg to got into the flexplate, it is hitting the ring with the notches. Is there a trick to it or is something wrong. Another "mechanic" changed the engine so not sre what was done with the flexplate. In my understanding the flexplate can only go on one way is this correct.

I found the spot the peg fits into. Is the engine going to be at TDC when peg installed? Mine is deffinately not at TDC. The cams are also not in the right orientation with the flat spots up.
