Creaking Soft Top
I had an annoying creaking sound in my XKR convertible that at first I thought was coming from the dash. At low speed and hitting any kind of rise in the road it would happen.
Yesterday I wasdriving with the top down and after the ride I realized I never heard the creak during the drive. Bells went off and this morning I used some white lithium grease on the latch, and two inserts on the top that fit into the top of the windshield and no more noise.
I'm far from being a tech, but it seems I got lucky on this one.

Good trouble shooting and preventive maintenance of the top squeak.
To further prevent squeak-like noises,vinyl-rubber protectorant [not ArmorAll] is applied and rubbed intothe rubberweatherstripingthat runs alongthe top of the windshield header . Actually this lube/sprayis used throughout the car on all rubber weatherstriping.
And after reading your post, I went out and lubricated the articulating joints of the top's metal frame. I used either machine oil, lithium grease, or WD-40 depending on location, function, or proximity to the headliner or canvas top material. gordo

Just be very careful that oil or grease does not drip onto, or seep through to your headliner. I use machine oil, but just a drop or two, and have a rag at the ready to wipe the joint of excess oil. On sections where thisis too close to the fabric, I use WD40. gordo
