I notice there seems to be a lot of concern about using exactly the right fluid in the convertible top system to help avoid the dreaded 'green shower'. In many of our customers' boats, there are hydraulic/electric rams that position the outdrives for optimum performance, or shallow water operation. Although the manufacturers recommend ATF as the fluid of choice, long experience has led us to use a product called Rislone (a common oil additive) which has the right viscosity, as well as mild anti-corrosion/gumming qualities, and has no effect on the rubber seals and o-rings. The fluid in the reservoir in my '00 was low (and a bit scuzzy-looking) when I bought it, so I drained it, and replaced it with Rislone. So far, (two years and plenty of cycles) it has worked well, and the top operation is very smooth.

I don't think the dreaded green shower is the type of fluid, but the high pressure put on the system at the end of the cycle. Gus and Dennis have done considerable research on this subject look at the above sticky frequently asked questions. Although I wouldn't take any chances on the system in these cars, you never know, it could be an expensive alternative.

There are lots of synthetic materials (plastics and seals) in these systems, and the incorrect fluid might cause deterioration over time. It may be OK, but you are treading into unknown territory, whereas (one would hope) the compatibilty of the specified fluid was analyzed and assessed when these systems were originally designed.
The correct fluid (Pentosin CHF11S) is widely available at NAPA and on Amazon for around $20-$25.
