Default DIY Servicing

Is it possible to service our cars DIY to manufactures spec? What do we need to check? To keep are cars safe and in tip top condition.

Cheers Al

I use my Android Tablet (Toshiba Thrive) and Torque Pro. Monitors a lot of stuff, most of which I don't understand.

Al,

There's nothing either too complicated or requiring special tools to follow the manufacturer's service items and schedule:

JAGUAR XK8 4.2 - Vehicle Maintenance Sheet.pdf

Repairs is another thing entirely.

Hi Graham thanks for the pdf. Only the greasing and the belt changes that I need to find more detail on. I would let the garage change the brake fluid.
Do you do most of your servicing?

Thanks again Al

Al,

I've always done the servicing on my Jaguars. Records are entered on simple spreadsheets, one for Service Schedule items and a second for Tyres & Brakes. The following examples are the final ones for my last XK8 4.0.

XK8 4.0 - Service History.pdf

XK8 4.0 - Tyres & Brakes.pdf

These are printed off and attached to the Service Record book. The level of detail gives me peace of mind and always seems to impress when I come to sell.

Changing the brake fluid isn't difficult with the assistance of Mrs G as pedal pusher. Years ago I had ABV's (Automatic Bleed Valves) fitted on my DB5 which made the job very easy. They looked like ordinary bleed nipples but were non-return valves so bleeding became a one man operation with no risk of pulling air into the system. Unfortunately I haven't seen ABV's for many years or I'd have them on the Jaguar.

The single serpentine belt on the normally aspirated cars is straightforward but I think your XKR is only slightly more complex with a second belt?

3G;

Bet you wish you still had that DB5, eh what?

I used to 'borrow' them from my Dad's shop and blow off all the posers on the local speed street with them.

Still wish I had my red XK150 convertible from college....but I have to say the XKR is a much nicer car for the Grand Tour.

FYI I rented an XK 150S last summer and noticed that while it was elegant and sounded perfect....any white van or econo car could stay with it on either the Motorway or the back lanes of Southern England.....sad in a way.

cheers,

jj

JJ,

I had the DB5 for twenty eight years and sold it in 2006 - wouldn't like to think how much it's worth now . However, just like you found with the XK150S last summer, any mundane modern car can stay with 60's perfomance cars at legal speeds.

I also have great regrets. I sold a XK150S drop head coupe about forty years ago in mid restoration. I had completely restored the engine, transmission, overdrive and carbs. But the body was beyound me. Sold it for $3,500. Sick...sick...sick
