Unhappy The dreaded J gate stuck in park-

Hello
I have a 1997 4 litre convertible. Which due to ill health I haven't given it the attention I used to. Taking it out all last week no issues and booked it in for gearbox oil and filter change. She's done 150000 but has jag replacement engine and gearbox at 32000, due to the Nikasil bore issues. Runs sweet and quick with no issues. Went to go out Friday and it's stuck in park. No solenoid click, no instrument warning lights, Er flashing on air con control.
starts fine and runs fine. Did the manual disengage of the solenoid went for a drive around all okay. Parked up started all worked fine instruments all doing their system checks. This morning same issues plus strange antics warning lights, oil and amp meter stay activated even though it's all turned off. "Drivers Door not shut, this warning has not gone out even though all is off and instrument.
There isn't much I haven't had apart and rebuilt on it but I'm not great with electronics. So any thoughts you may have would be gratefully received. Also it has a new battery kept on trickle.

173 reads. Let's see if we can get you started...

Do your brake lights work?
Do the vanity lights in the sunvisors work?
What is the voltage across the battery terminals with ignition off (if on trickle, disconnect it and wait 30 mins). Should be ~12.6V

If above all checks out, try a hard reset. Member Gus explains how, with pictures:

Unhappy Jgate issues

Hello and thank you for the reply, battery is 12.9/13 volts, vanity lights work, I haven't checked the sun visor light or brake light but will tomorrow. I think the hard reset is a likely fix, it's 2 years or more since I have done one so with all the stop starts, disconnects and reconnects you have a valid point. It's possible the main instrument pack processor has had a crash and caused the random behaviour.
I will report back after I check your suggestions.

Hi Michael the lights all worked brakes everything, so straight to the hard reset and hey presto sanity is restored. out for a run after a good clean, top down and how I enjoyed driving her. Stops and starts all with no issues. Well done for reminding me of that little trick. Lets hope it's cured.
Thanks Dave F
