Default Dumb question - what goes in this hole?

Was doing some work on my car yesterday (installed the antenna switch, failed to remove my stuck passenger seat, cleaned out the throttle assembly, and tightened up the throttle cable) and I noticed this empty tube. I'm not even sure of where on JTIS to look it up as I don't know what is is. But it looks like it should have something in the opening?

What is it? What should go in there?

Dave

Yikes, Dave, thats your transmission dipstick tube. It is supposed to be capped. You can get the cap and lock pin from the Jag dealer, or since it is a Mercedes transmission, cheaper from here:
http://www.rmeuropean.com/Part-Numbe..._5C1313F8.aspx and http://www.rmeuropean.com/Part-Numbe..._5C1313F8.aspx.

Since it has been running uncapped, you probably should think seriously about a fluid flush.

Yah, I think the benz tranny was in the XKR from 99 (or was 2000 the first year?) to 2002. Once it got to 2003 and up, ZF took both 8s and Rs, right?
