I love some of the more elaborate nav remodels people have done here, but I decided to take a simpler and reversible (without buying a 2nd nav) mod that met my goals and was much less effort (literally < 1 hour). Maybe good enough for you too...
2003 XKR with the alpine system. I use the Discount Car Stereo bluetooth adapter and am pleased with it, and generally just use my phone. So I decided to just try to make a low profile phone holder that would also cover the Nav to some degree. Didn't want to destroy my perfectly good unit or buy a used nav to cobble up (spoiler alert - no one sells cheap broken ones on ebay - they are all $200). So I found a good low profile mag mount/charger for my iphone and since it's light and low stress - I literally taped a piece of light gauge (cut with utility knife) Aluminum sheet metal over the display, and attached the adhesive phone mount to that. The mount I use is also a charger but I don't really need it as a charger - and if I do go on a longer trip, I can just run a wire to it or the phone. You could get fancier and hardwire it of course, but would required more involved wire routing.
There was some clearance between the trim panel and face of the display, so was no problem fitting - or causing bulging or anything. And the tape is out of visible location, so can easily be reversed. I hindsight, I'd probably put a thin piece of foam over the screen as added protection but it works just fine - the mag is perfect enough to hold it but not yank hard on things popping it off. I know it may seem like it's flimsy or the tape isn't enough but there really isn't significant stress on it and it works out just fine. If I was going to mag mount a full ipad, I'd probaby try to stiffen things up a bit.
I'm actually going to do a short term fix which is even less elegant- triple gauge retrofit and just leave the gauges off until I bother hooking them up, then integrate a tablet mount.
