Default Electrical Gremlins RESOLVED

I'm out of the country at the moment and the memsahib is having some problems so all suggestions are welcome.

First thing was the door wouldn't lock with the fob but does with the key, using the fob gives the high pitched tone like a door is not closed properly.
Now she says she can't open the windows or move the door mirrors, I don't think the door window drop and raise is working either but I'm not certain.

Any thoughts?

Could be a failing door latch microswitch. The drivers side typically gets flaky before the passenger side does....

Norri,

Has the battery run down? Not to be sexist, is she capable of putting the car on a battery charger? Tell her not to close the door if the window is stuck up.

Is the memsahib stuck without the car? If it's the door latch and/or microswitch, you've got the next car job, when you get home.

Thanks guys, the microswitch was my thought also, she does need the car so hopefully the window will be ok.

Have her find that can of WD-40 in the shed and then have her spray liberally the door mechanism with the door open. Bet you want have anything to fix when arriving home. It will in most cases free up a stuck micro-switch.

That sounds like a plan she can work with.

Spraying the door latch innards with silicone spray was always a temporary fix for me. It would restore normal function for a couple of months, then the issues would return. Repeating the process would buy me a couple more months. But sooner or later you will have to replace the flaky microswitch....

A couple of months sounds perfect at the minute. Fingers crossed.

Did you just spray it around the latch with the door open?

Now I just need to pin down a time to walk her through it with a 15 hr time difference.

Yep, you want her to insert the long narrow plastic tube into the spray button on top of the can and then aim the other end of that tube into multiple crevices around the door latch. She should try to spray every nook and cranny she can reach around that latch, and she should also vary the angle of the spray once she inserts the tube into the latch area. Quick bursts of spray are enough - don't empty the can in one shot....

Well it turned out it wasn't the micro switch, it was the 25 amp fuse that feeds the drivers door module.
I disconnected everything in the door replaced the fuse and hooked everything back one at a time with no problems, so I'm
hoping it was just a tired fuse.
I'd been having some problems with the remote top unit so I got that sorted when I was in there with some good advice from Steve (WhiteXKR).
It was a broken wire but Steve was able to point me at the right one to check first which probably saved me a shed load of time.

Well done. Let's hope the new fuse indeed did the trick....

I was also out of the country when you posted the thread and missed it. Blowing a 25 amp DDM fuse has to be bottom of the list for sequential troublehooting steps!

Good to hear you got it sorted.

Well, looks like I spoke two soon, the new fuse lasted two days and blew.
So looks like a damaged wire between the fuse box and the DDM.
