Default Engine Failsafe Mode--A concern?

I have gotten the Engine Failsafe Mode message on two occaisions in the last 10 days on my 2001 XKR (41k miles). Both times I had been driving for about 5 minutes when it kicked on. I pulled over and shut off the car, let it sit for a minute or two and then re-started. Once re-started the car runs fine. It is not my daily driver, but I have been driving it almost daily with the warm weather.

Any ideas what might be the cause--or places to start looking? The first time I thought it might just be an anomaly, but now that it has happened twice, I'm beginning to wonder...

Yes, read your OBDII fault codes.

Generally speaking, Failsafe Mode indicates Throttle Body problems, including poor connections to the Pedal Position Sensors and Throttle Position Sensors.

Also a "Sticking" Throttle Plate. This would require Throttle Body Cleaning using the proper Cleaner and Procedure.

But, as WhiteXKR says, you really have to read the Trouble Codes.

Would one of relatively basic fault code readers clear that code?

I have that code in my message display, although mine has come up because i'm taking bits off the engine (including the throttle body) and reconnecting the battery at night to keep the car alarmed.

I just wondered if that code requires any advanced code reading function/s.

Get the code read just to know what it is and they will be able to clear it at the same time. I say to have them read it as it sounds like you still may have issues to resolve and just clearing the code won't solve your problems.

Personally, I have found the "Carchip" logger very useful in diagnosing issues. Also, I have just purchased a Bluetooth OBD interface for $13 off ebay and the torque software for Android is apparently $5. It's a tool that's definitely worth having at the price.
