Default Replacement dealership thermostat 84c/183.2f ?

Doing the hose replacement I noticed the old and new thermostat were rated at 84c or 183.2f......

Thats is a low temp for a T-stat.

That is correct. 185 F is when coolant gauge needle hits center scale (and stays there until about 230 F).

The aftermarket low temp thermostat for these cars is 170 F.

It's the incorrect belief that running a lower coolant temperature will result in additional power, reduced fuel consumption, longer engine life or any of the other old myths and misconceptions. It's all been thrashed many times here and on other boards.

It subjective to the motor. A small block chevy 305 responds well from a 205 degree to a 180-160.

It seems the jag motor is set up well

But of course there is no *one* person who is the arbiter of all that is deemed to be "old myths and misconceptions".

Good reading can be found in technical papers published by the manufacturers of coolant hoses who have studied the long term effects of elevated operating temperatures on the goods they engineer and sell.
