Can I presume that replacing the ignition coil ( No. 8) in my 99 XK8 is about the same procedure? Take the fancy engine cover off and look down (or thereabouts?) and, should I look first for the 2 pin or 4 pin set up before I buy a replacement? It fouled out and now I can't smog the car until I fix it. So how do I figure out whether my engine (supposedly rebuilt at 47 G miles, under warranty (timing chain tensioners broke) and now at 88 G, is an AJ26/27?

May we assume that you have had the Diagnostic Trouble Codes scanned and the code indicated a problem with the cylinder 8 ignition coil? If you know the actual code it would be worthwile to report it here so other members will have a more complete understanding of the issues you are dealing with.

Your '99 XK8 will have an AJ27 engine. The cover on top of the valve cover is easily removed and where the coil packs are located. I assume you got a P03xx misfire code leading you to the #8 cylinder. At 88k miles, if they weren't changed with the rework it could be a spark plug rather than a coil pack.

Thank you, ths is great. I'll let everyone know how it goes. The car overheated for a while, I had some problems just when I bought the car that I'm slowly fixing. misfrie. then the steering columm wires. later, not now.
