Default Engine knocking or clicking...video inside.

Gentlemen,

Have a listen the the videos below. I've had a knocking or clicking since I purchased the vehicle sight unseen, 2 months ago. It seems to be louder now than before. The knocking is loudest and most consistent when in Drive...and sort of rattles when initially shifting in to neutral or very lightly accelerating. Any ideas?

Never mind my wife honking at me towards the end of this one...she pulled in as I was taking the video.

Can't play the video. Says it's private.

I listened a couple times, and I'm not sure what noise you're concerned about. Is it directly related to engine RPM? Where is the noise eminating from...closest you can tell, that is?

I thought it would have been obvious despite being a poor cell phone video. As far as I can tell it's eminating from the engine bay, though I'm not positive as it doesn't make the noise in park. In order to hear it in the video you must turn your speakers up. Try to note the rattle-like noise when shifting in to neutral. And the repetitive "knocking" or "clicking" when in Drive. It's clear to me, but I know what I'm listening to.

Head phones + max volume you can hear it. The noise would be alot clearer if you did the video from the engine bay.

Perhaps...the problem is the car needs to be in drive in order to hear it. I'll get assistance from my wife and try to get a better video from under the hood.

Hmm...interesting discovery. I just listened to the video from YouTube and it seems that uploading the video file may have compressed the sound, as its a little more prevalent in the original video file.

I added it to dropbox...perhaps this will have a little more clarity.

Not sure what the noise is hard to tell with your 2 videos. If you can get another video from under the hood. I am unable to pinpoint the problem but it is between a VVT or belt tensioner.

I have 2 videos on this link for the belt tensioner JagRepair.com - Jaguar Repair Information Resource

Take off your belt, and see if the noise goes away. I had a knocking, or rattling noise on a friends XJ8 that came and went, and didn't seem to matter as to what the engine speed was, or if the car was moving. I took off the belt, and found his idler pulley bearings were shot, and the pulley was wobbling, and noisy. At least it is a place to start......Be cool....Mike

Yes, it works on my phone too. Thank you...although I'm experiencing a different type of knock.
