Default Engine Number Location XK8 1998

Hi

Ive researched on internet and Jaguar Forum but I cant find an exact location where my engine number is located, just a close up of the number on Google but nothing else.

I want to know if my car has the new metal liners in or not and have been told that if it's a new engine replaced by Jaguar then there should be a green and cream metal plate with the number.

Not only can I not find the plate but I cant find the actual place where the foundary/Jaguar has stamped the number.

As I said I have spent quite some time looking through all your forums on XK8 and Engine Numbers but nothing.

I list below the car details :
XK8 1998 Blue cream leather, 120,000, Coupe.

It's very difficult to see, but it is stamped on the aluminium casting next to the thermostat housing. See Bob's pictures in post #8 here :

If you have a replacement engine, the "tag" looks like this. Mine was actually tucked into the leather wallet with the manuals, but it is supposed to be stuck to the engine .

Problem is, it doesn't gave you a "proper" engine number so you're not really any better off. My replacement engine had "second generation" tensioners which were beginning to crack so I replaced them anyway. The *only* way to be 100% sure with an early car is to check with your own eyes.

Yeah, JagJoe80, I was in that same bind.

The number stamped on my '97 is so faint that I'd looked right at it a few times but hadn't made it out. In the end it was right where it was supposed to be, near the thermostat housing and that engine lift point.

Get a bright light and try looking from a few angles.

Here's Bob's picture from the linked thread David gave in post #3:

The number is so difficult to find, it's worth a repeat of such a clear picture.
