That sounds TERRIBLE...STOP the engine and DO NOT start it again until the problem is identified. You could be very close to major engine damage.

Sounds chain-related to me. Do you know the state of your secondary chain tensioners?

Does he rattle change with the engine speed?

 

Sounds very similar to the sound on my son's 98 XJR, only the other bank. The sound diminished considerably when additional revs were applied. (rather judiciously I might add). It was one of the primary tensioner guides almost totally disintegrated which allowed the chain to make contact with the front cover. With the help from the great minds and generosity of the forum members, we replaced primary tensioners and guides. Purrs like the proverbial kitten now unless provoked with throttle...then snarls.

 

Yes the noise decreases if you rev a little

 

What about the speed of the rattle is it related to engine speed?
