Default ? Ever Use a Drew Technologies Mongoose Pro JLR - OEM Diagnostics

Hey Guys, just stumbled across this and it is VERY interesting.
Any Advice or experience on this out there?
It's an interface cable that's supposed to allow you to access OEM level Jaguar Dealer diagnostic & module programming.

Pretty incredible, if it works....

Don't be put off by the statements at the beginning of that thread about it only being for later models, the Mongoose will work with all OBD2 Jags...

So how does this thing work and what can you do with it? Does it hook to a laptop and, if so, can you do any minor reprogramming?

Doug, with the mongoose and legit IDS/SDD software, you're essentially armed with the same capabilities that a dealer tech has...albeit with less experience, online and phone support, and your coworkers advice. Also note, you can do lots of harm by pushing buttons and going into areas a DIY shouldn't really be in...but as long as we know that, it still is a great tool...even better than my AE, which I recently sold to another member when I got my SDD/mongoose clone working with both my cars.

It is true we have problems with it working on some of the older cars. Last week we ran into a problem with a 2003 S-type & had to use the old VCM.

What problem did you run into?? By and large I have very little trouble with any of the cars and the MongoosePro. Except for certain test functions. For instance the EVAP pressure test never works and the propshaft balance gear doesn't work. Other than that it been smooth sailing.

Thanks!

I was asking more as a point of interest rather than for actually getting one of these and using it. I was just curious as to what else you needed apart from what looks like a dongle and a cable. Obviously the dongle plugs into the OBD and I assume the cable plugs into a laptop? If so, is there also some software that one must purchase or does this come with the dongle/cable?

The device is just the interface. It plugs into a USB port on the computer and connects to the Diagnostic Connector on the car. At that point all is dependent on the software you have. The software is completely separate from the device. The software can come from Jaguar, in the case of IDS/SDD, or from some other source that builds software that is J2534 compliant; meaning it will function with any device built to utilize the J2534 communication standard. There is a software "toolbox" that comes with the MongoosePro, it's intended to provide module flash programming capability and read fault codes.

I also use software form Palmer Performance Engineering called ScanXL Pro. It works well with the MongoosePro and add lots of diagnostic capabilities in addition to reading codes. ScanXL Pro will also works well with cheaper, slower ELM interfaces, both USB and Bluetooth.

Hope that helps!

LOVE Your response, Friend

*BUT, for a "novice", (and I'm not afraid of computer progamming, as I work in I.T)...... would this REALLY be "overkill" compared to a nice OBDII reader/scanner ? Can you really "FLASH" your current settings?
My Jag Service Guy in Tampa, who was acting quite honest, mentioned the danger of not ALL cars having the same features. Adding a feature in a "position" where there is no "item"..can screw things up.
My Car drives like a Dream and I've learned from experience...trying to IMPROVE perfectly fine things...screws them up, along with many other things.
