How big of a piece of wood do I need to use a floor jack to raise the rear end without doing damage to the rear suspension and axle assembly ?

I use a piece of hardwood that is about 8 inches square and 1.5 inches thick with my floor jack. I push the floor jack almost all the way underneath the rear of our XK8 to the solid metal crossmember that Reverend Sam references in his youtube video showing how to jack up his recently-sold 2003 XK8. You may want to find that video and take a look at it....

 

I use a 6" length of 2x4. Works perfectly.
