Default Holy Overfill Batman!!!!

Or just WTH!

Long story short I had Pep Boys change my oil last night...with MY oil...and my dipstick this morning is reading about 1-1/4" ABOVE the two little drilled hole markers. I gave him 2 containers of Pennzoil Platinum 5W30. One was unopened ("5+ qts"), and the other had about 2 qts in it as I remember.

The tech told me I didn't have enough...but I'm sure he was thinking of the old 4 qt. jugs. I told him that they are the 5+ jugs and it should be plenty. He said ok and proceeded while I went next door to dinner.

Long story short again (they didn't have the tires I wanted, and were supposed to be putting on), the tech said the oil was reading between the two holes and we agreed I'd check it in the morning.

SO...do I really have that much overfill..or is it possible the approx. 7+ qts just shows like that on the stick? I think I have started with 6 qts when I have done it myself, then added some when it all settled down. This included the change of .....maybe...a new Bosch filter.

Is it possible he didn't change the filter??????? The oil on the stick is super clean (almost very hard to see). So, WTH???

The oil would probably show as pretty clean, even if he had forgot to change the filter. I would go back and talk to them to determine the issue. I also would have some oil extracted as the over fill may cause a leak at the mains.

Have you read this thread about oil level/capacity? https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...verfill-57708/

From the info there it seems unlikely that the overfill will cause a problem, but it would be worth checking that the filter was changed and where the extra oil came from.

We speak different languages on this one - quarts for you and litres for me.

According to the Handbook, the difference in oil quantity between the lower edge of the cross hatched section (MIN) and the top of the cross hatched section is 1 litre.

If you measure this length of this section on the dipstick (it's 3/4 inch on mine), you can calculate the overfill by proportion to the 1-1/4" over the top your oil level is showing.

While I often purchase parts and supplies on sale at our local Pep Boys, I would NEVER trust their service people to work on any of our vehicles....

I talked to the guy that did the oil. He said he definitely changed the filter, too. I had my granddaughter crawl under and verify. He said he definitely did not use any more than the 5 + 2 (approx). Even if it was 5 + 3 I'd think it would only show another .5 " on the stick. That's about the space between the first and second hole. He again verified it was sitting between the two holes when he checked it before left, but it was above the second hole when I checked later that evening....and higher this morning. Everything else seems normal.

Would anything show different on my oil pressure "guage"? He said, last night, that the guage (or light) kept showing "low", but it immediately came to proper indication when I drove it home.

The gauge is driven by a pressure switch that triggers around 5 PSI. It will only display 0 PSI or 50 PSI...both typically are lies.

It is normal for it to flash low for possibly up to about 4 or 5 seconds on initial startup after a filter change while the filter fills up and absorbs the oil. It should never flash low after that if everyting is normal and your filter has a working valve to prevent drainback.

You should definitely read the thread that Norri linked. You will find that the level is actually just right.

In addition, it is quite possible that the tech read the dipstick while the new oil was still making its way down into the sump. When you checked it in the morning, it had been draining all night.

Well, I'm going with the updated info and believing the amount of oil put in was correct...since I handed him the oil. So, I heading out from las Vegas to Northern California in a few minutes...sans new tires , but I'll be ok until I get to the Sacramento area. The Dunlops will just have to do for another 600 miles.

My Granddaughter is hooking up the XM right now. Happy Trails to me.
