Can anyone provide me with information on a direct replacement for the 6.5 inch front door speakers? If someone has gone though a similar upgrade in the past I would like to know where I can find the exact same speakers. If possible, I am looking for matching screw holes while not having to cut anything out. Also looking for a matching plug but if not I can always solder the wires back on. Thanks.

 

The standard speakers were made by Philips - at least they were on my 2001MY XKR.

Most decent 6.5" mid/bass drivers should include a ring to allow you to mount into the existing screw locations on that plastic moubting ring. You will have to solder the connections.

I found the Alpine G Series a direct replacement, fitted them a few times

Obviously you still need to change the connections but they go straight in...

 

I just tried putting in some brand new Pioneer two-way, 250 watt speakers. It sounded worse than what is in there now. I know the weak link is the CD/radio unit. Before I replace that is there any point in trying 400 watt speakers?

Do a search on speakers and get informed on what others have done. It's not the watts that a speaker can take that makes the difference.

 

A higher wattage just allows the speaker to take more power. Generally, higher is better, but it won't make them louder or better sounding. 6.5" is a very common size-- I'm sure there are plenty of options. I expect that this is a multi-speaker system the impedence rating may be unusual. Normal speakers are 8 ohms, but I would not be suprised if the OEM ones are 4 ohms. Does anyone here know? I haven't taken the door apart to look. An impedence mis-match would make them possibly sound bad. I would look at "Crutchfield" online. MC

 

I have the OEM speaker in hand. It is 4 ohms. I just tried another set of lower wattage speakers and they are 2 ohms. No improvement in sound.

 

You really need to do some reading if you want to get ahead. The wattage on speakers is irrelevant for sound quality as you must know by now.

What tweeters are you using in the photo? or are they standard??

 

Dropped in Alpine SPS-610c speaker kit (speaker and tweeter) very easy install. Also did the forum recommended Kicker speaker replacement in the rear and pulled and replaced the stock amp. Speakers and Amp were $800 installed.

 

I've just upgraded my front speakers (along with the rears and an amp, sub to follow!).
I fitted Infinity Reference 6.5" components, with 1" tweeters up under the dash grilles, on my 2004 coupe.
It would be easier on an earlier car to fit the tweeters to the top of the doors (and to be honest I don't think there'd really be all that big a difference in the sound quality), keeping the crossovers in the doors - there's loads of space - and using the existing speaker wires as the feed into the crossover. I don't think your car has the tweeter and dash wiring connected at the main harness.
To install the 6.5" drivers, I used a flapper-type sanding wheel and eased around 3mm out of the inside edge of the factory plastic mounts for clearance, using the lower screw as my reference point to align the speakers to. I then simply drilled 3 more small pilot holes in the plastic and fitted the speaker with one original jag screw at the bottom and three supplied with the speakers after applying the supplied sealing foam.
The jag's door speaker fitment is actually quite a good design as the plastic fitting is foam sealed to both the speaker and the door, providing an excellent baffle, making the door an almost perfect enclosure to give the speaker something to work against other than simply free air.
The improvement in sound clarity and bass response was excellent, even before I fitted the amp!
