Front seats
I am at a loss to know which seats I have in my 2001 XK8. I am in the process of removing the seats from my car to install new seat covers from Lseat. The electrical schematic says the car should have either 3-way or 5-way seats.
At first the passenger seat would not move, period. The seat module is not working. The driver seat moved only fore and aft. I switched the driver seat module to the passenger side and it still would not move. I saw a post where the OP had said that jumping Pins 7 and 8 will get the seat to move. At first it did not and after peering under the seat I saw that the worm gear was rusted. I sprayed some PB blaster and left it for a while. After jumping pin 7 to groung the seat moved a little and jumping pin 8 moved it a little in the opposite direction. I fished a garbage bag under the seat as best I coud and gave the whole mechanish a good bath with PB blaster and left it overnight. Next morning, I jumped Pin 7 and 8 to ground as I was able to get the seat to move all the way forward and all the way back. Now, I was able to remove the seat. I removed the seat bottom from the frame and all I see there are the 2 worm gears and a motor that move the seat fore and aft. There is no mechanism or motor to move the seat bottom up and down. The seat switch pod has 3 switches 1. fore and aft. 2. up and down and 3. recline.
there are 2 motors in the seat back. One for the head restraint and the other for reclining the seat back..
For those who want to know how to remove the head restraint, it is just a ball and socket arrangement and the head restraint bars just fit into the white T-Bar that is connected to the cable that drives the worm gear to move the head restraint up and down. A little force and the ball disconnects from the socket. This can be done without removing the seat back cover.
Just grab the head restraint and jerk it upwards to release it from the socket. Done.

I may be mistaken, but I think a simple way of determining whether you have three way or 5 way seats is whether your front headrests are separate from the backrest or integrated to them.
I think most 4.0 cars are 3-way seats and the 4.2 cars are 5-way unless you have the Recaro’s, which I believe were also 3-way.
