wonder if anyone has a front coil spring available where they can measure the diameter of the top of the spring where it intersects with the upper mount. Essentially the hole inside the spring where it slips onto the upper mount.

Unloaded front Spring: Top Inner Diameter 119.73mm.

Upper shock mount Outer Diameter of protrusion to receive this spring: 123.12mm (guess that's why I always need a clamp to seat the spring :-))

Spring tapers big (top) to small (bottom).

Dan, glad you saw this and thank you for acknowledging it. It's not you, but sure gets frustrating when you put the extra effort in to help and the folks never respond. Glad I could help out.

The Welsh poly mounts last longer, but probably less than 2x as long in my experience. I just put new ones in. They cost $140 per pair.

BTW, I would not recommend replacing only 1 side. My left side was low, could see the center shock bolt had shifted, so I ordered a pair, but just replaced one to see. After I finished, both sides ride height was now good. Took her for a ride. Not much difference that I could tell.

Well I figured, I've got this down to a 2.5 hour job now, it was sunny so I dove in. (Even remembered to correctly position the brake caliper before I tightened the upper bolt this time ;-)). Still 2.5 hours total, but checked ride height again. Right side up another 1/2 inch, but the big surprise was left side changed too! Now up near 16 inches.

Took her for a drive - knew immediately it was more like she should be. Big improvement.

Just replaced the front coil springs on the front of my 2003 Coupe. Used Suplex since OEM NLA. My Welsh Poly Mounts were close to 3+ yrs. old & 25K miles, did not appear to have settled any. Still in great condition. The Before on springs were Left (14.75") and Right(15.0") . The new springs raised a total of 1" each side. Left was 15.75" and Right was 16".
Ride is tight with almost no sway or lean, very little dive when hitting the brakes. Thanks for the above info.

so, I have already replaced from the original, these are aftermarket ones sourced over here in the UK. There is no source for poly versions over here and I'd have to get them shipped from the US, as you say you used the Welsh ones. Im very annoyed that the ones on lasted about a year and a half. I pulled the wheel off yesterday to check and the drivers side is very compressed.. passenger side less so. You can clearly see a difference in ride height with the car sitting.

Rest of the car is poly bushed so I will tackle this when the UK weather improves. Last time I did the top mounts I noticed that my shocks whereat the best. So, this time round I'm replacing them too.. Hoping the better damping will make the car even more fun.

I was considering the use of coil overs. I have seen a set for 800GBP but then theres the delivery on top. They come with top mounts too.. But I like the idea of cats and so will stick with them. Also have some Brembos off an xj350 with 366mm discs.. working on a bracket to get them fixed on..

Then I will tackle some of the body work probs, bonnet and boot need a respray from rust or stone chips.. Its never ending..

 

It may be worth shipping the Welsh poly upper shock mounts to you. Many of us here in the US are extremely happy with ours. My wife's 2006 XK8's Welsh poly upper shock mounts were installed more than three years ago and have held up extremely well....
