Front wheel bearing replacement
I found it easier -- and maybe cheaper -- to replace the entire hubs with refurbs with new bearings installed. I found mine at Auto Reserve Jaguar of Derbyshire. I was able to order two remanufactured hubs for about $150 each and $70 shipping. They arrived -- UK to US -- in about four days. Couldn't be happier.
I have been doing quite a few searches and the upper ball joint seems to be readily available (rock auto has one for $20) The lower ball joint seems difficult to get. I found one from URO parts on amazon which had overnight prime shipping that switched to 4/5 day shipping after I placed the order.
Are the Lemfoerder products better? - I see those available for about $58 from other marketplaces. Any ideas on the best ones to get?
On the replacement / removal of the ball joint - Can I use a ball joint press with a C clamp to get ball joint out? The instructions need some grinding and I am not sure if I want to do that? Doing a search on the forums found some heat and refrigerator technique to press the joint in, not much about removal.
Any thoughts on Lemforder? With the difference in price - about 3 times more 60 vs 20 - I am hoping they will be of better quality.
Hi chilly,
Getting the old joints out is relatively straightforward. I've attached the JTIS procedure for the upper. Note it involves the use of a press, altough, again, you may be able to improvise & use a C-clamp.
The lower can be removed in a similar manner, but getting the new one in is not straightforward due to the shape of the lower control arm. If the joint is still good and clean then you could consider just replacing the rubber boot.
Lemforder is a respected name:- part # for the lower joint (Jag. MNC1350AA) is 2698001

I've replaced both upper and lower ball joints on my 2000 XK8. No grinding was required, and as Michael mentioned - Lower is a major PITA to reinstall new ball joint but can be done - need a 20ton Press and I used a 4x4 as a brace under the beveled end of the lower - if I were to do it again, I would custom cut the 4x4 to the shape of the lower to provide better stability
