Default Fuel pump problem (98 XK8)

Wow !!!!!
Had window tint installed today, then had it towed home !?!?!?
After a little investigating, I have reset the emergency fuel cutoff switch (I did feel like it was tripped) no change. Checked fuse in trunk (boot, sorry) not blown but also no power either. Swapped around relays, still no power at fuse.
Any help would be appreciated when I try again in the morning.
Many thanks, Terro

Power will only appear for a few seconds after the ignition is turned on, then it will shut off for safety unless the car starts. Put the voltmeter between the fuse and ground, then have someone try to start the car. If the voltage appears briefly then shuts off, your fuel pump is likely kaput.

Thanks whitexkr, I had not thought of that. I had thought that they had flooded or washed out the cylinders but was checking out fuel supply side when I got it back home. Hopefully I'll have a clearer head in the morning and have a helping hand trying to start her while I watch volt meter

As a double check, to make sure it is a fuel problem and not an ignition problem, there is a schrader valve on the fuel rail feeding the 8 fuel injectors. If you depress the schrader valve after cranking there should be a strong squirt of fuel. If not, it is another pointer to a fuel pump failure.

Attached are two links one to check the pressure and the other for the power to the pump. Remember you have 2 fuses to the fuel pump.

Looking very much like a bad fuel pump. Power does cycle when key is turn on and zero gas at fuel rail.

thanks for all the help. Fuel pump is dead, got it out without removing the tank. It can be done threw the sub woofer hole. It's a coupe so it's a little tight but better than dealing with the lines above the differential, in my opinion. I'm picking up a new one from napa in the morning. We will see how easy it goes back together, although now knowing how it was put together in the first place I see no problem in putting it back in.
Thank again, Terro

I wonder if it's possible to remove the convertible fuel pump the same way? If so, it would be great to have it documented with pictures.

It has been, here: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...access-118362/ ...but you have to cut a hole in the rear shelf.

Which kind of begs the question: What is good practice towards keeping these fuel pump humming for as long as possible? Fuel filter and injector cleaner come to mind. Anything else I should look into?

The 2003 and later 4.2 L cars have a totally different fuel system that does not seem to be subject to this type of failure seen on the 4.0 quite as often.

On the earlier cars, long period of disuse seem to bring on the failure more frequently.

I wonder if a weak battery due to storage would cause the fuel pump to overheat and lead to early failure?

If I get 15 years out of this one I'll be happy. Stuff just happens some times. This 98 XK8 has served me well, I'm not afraid to drive her anywhere.

I've heard it said that keeping the fuel tank fairly full helps with fuel pump life since the pump relies on the fuel to cool it while running.

No need to cut anything, all I did was to install a stud instead of a bolt that holds the pump and sump cover (as I would call it) because you are working blind and using only one hand.
It's not super easy, but it can be done.
