Default Garage door opener

Is there a trick, of which I am unaware, to get my 2002, XK8 convertible's garage door button to talk to my garage door? I have followed the door manual instructions but I do not have the XK 8 manual. There has been no connection between them so far. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks folks,
After some research on the Chamberlin (Garage door opener manufacturer) site and the Forums here, and after about a dozen trips between the car, the garage and the laptop, I got it working as follows:

1. Press and hold the "1" button on the garage doors handheld remote while pressing and holding the chosen button in the XK8's overhead until it blinks quickly. That indicates the car has learned the remote code.

2. Press the "Learn" button on the garage door openers motor. On my unit it lights steadily for 30 seconds to allow time to get into the car and press and hold the chosen button. When the units "link-up" the light on the garage door opener blinks. Presto! It works.

Like a woman, it's simple when you push the right buttons!

Always best to press the two outboard buttons at the same time and hold them depressed till the light blinks rapidly. That clears any previous owners settings. Most times the person wont hold the chosen button long enough. It can take 20 to 30 seconds to capture a code and cause the light to rapidly blink.

I struggled with this issue...trying to follow the manual's instructions. Simple solution as mentioned previously. Open garage door, pull car up near the door, get a step ladder and push the learn button on the overhead unit, within 30 seconds go into car, press the opener button you want to use and wait for light on overhead unit to blink twice and you're set.
