Default Gas line filter connection repair - RESOLVED

Ok so with all the gas filter threads I decided to change mine today since I had the car up for some other work, easy right ? I have the screw on type, picked up a new filter, loosened bracket and removed front line, then went to back, seemed loose but I took it off, slipped in new filter, attached front and tightened then to back........ here's when things went to sh..t

you know the feeling it's tightening.... then goes slack.. it must be stripped.
I was so upset (i'm sure my neighbors heard me) I called it a day I figure I have to remove the filter again (no biggie) but I am going to need to repair the threaded connection on the fuel line, I have no desire to replace the whole line. I suspect I can cut the line and install a 'bridge piece of fuel line with the appropriate connector.
I stopped because I know /learned not to work on a car when I'm not happy.

So I'm polling for ideas. Thanks

Jamdmyers,

My positive thoughts are with you mate, let's see what you've got when you take it out. This thing would be hard to strip, I'm hoping it's just something like a defective filter or it's a false alarm. I don't have suggestions, but I understand how frustrating that was. I'm not sure which is harder, the gas line's thread or the fuel filter's. Hope it is the fuel filter, let us know. Good luck!!

Ouch!

Reminds me of deciding to change the fuel filter on my XJ40 the day before going on holiday - bad decision with a similar result.

The filter is a lot softer material than the union nut so the filter thread ought to go before the union thread does. It could be no more than a bad sealing washer on one end.

Good luck.

Graham

Thanks Guys, I have the old filter still so I will check the threads on the line against it and visually of course. Hopefully it was the filter I'll pipe back in later today with results.

Resolved,
It was the union nut, not sure if the new filter caused it or U(ser)E(rror)
I was able to lightly file the threads on the nut, It was only a very small point crossed, I was then able to thread it down tight on a new filter.

Good to hear it was a simple (zero cost!) fix.

I've added 'RESOLVED' to your thread title to help anyone looking for advice on the same issue in future.

Since these filters are used by almost every full size GM van, truck and suv, there
are repair kits available.
