Default gasoline smell

OK. Have a 2000 XK8. Having issues with the "check engine" light. Took it back to where I got it. They hooked it up to an analyzer as got a "Vapor" reading so the guy told me. He reset the warning light and checked the gas cap. Went fine for a while and then the light came on again. Also every now and again I get a smell of gasoline. The car sat in storage 4 four years I was told. Any clues. Thanks in advance. Mike..

Gasoline smell can be fuel system related, however, the purge valve will produce very strong gasoline smell if it is not operating properly.

tberg's right, have the Evap system checked out, it sounds like your system is not purging properly.

Check the fuel rail for leaks? I had a decent gas smell on mine, ended up being a Pulsation dampener was leaking. It was not a knock you are smell but I could smell gas coming off the motor when it was sitting and the fans on, blowing the smell off the motor.

The purge valve is located on the left side under the front wheel well liner.
Once you have the liner off, the valve is mounted on the inner fender wall behind the wheel.

Does anyone have a procedure for the removal of the fuel rail and injectors on a 4.2 naturally aspirated engine?
Reading through various threads I'm leaning towards using injectorrx (of Houston TX) to close the damper port on each rail and to service the injectors while this is done. It looks like it would cost just a little more to do this compared to the damper replacement.
