Default General Questions

Hi everyone. I'm looking for a 98 xk8 convertible and it looks like I'm very serious now. I've clicked on the faq links and searched around on what to look out for when buying a used one. From what I understand, I need to show some concern over the Nikasil lined engine. Also, I need to inspect water pump, some doohickey with plastic impellers, and a belt tensioner thingy. Would someone mind explaining to me what the problems are with these parts specifically so I can relay that information to my mechanic and so that I can understand the situation a little better myself? Thanks for all your help.

A Nikasil problem will result in low compression. Compression test.

The early water pump plastic impellers broke off and the engine overheated. Overheating in this aluminum engine is very bad. Most water pumps have been replaced by now.

The plastic chain tensioners fail and let the exhaust cam get out of sync with the pistons resulting in bent valves. Remove a valve cover to verify metal tensioners.

Print out the FAQ 'I'm buying an used . . .' and give to your mechanic. An experienced one will understand.

Hi everyone. I must say I probably did something stupid... I saw this car and fell in love, and had the owner bring it to my mechanic. I didn't realize my mechanic isn't familiar with Jags. He was confused to the point where he couldn't find the transmission fluid. He couldn't/wasn't willing to do the recommended stuff above. My stupidity... I bought the car anyway. $6900... 115k miles. Excellent aesthetic condition.

So............ what I'm experiencing so far:

Tire size is one size too big, installed by previous owner because he felt it looked better... when I hit bumps, it rubs the car, but I knew this going into the purchase.

Now... I was driving it, and especially at lower speeds, when I press the gas, it intermittently will make a grinding noise that sounds like it's coming from the back of the car. When I let go of the gas, it goes away. But like I said, that's intermittent, it's only occasional and when I press the gas again, it's gone. Any ideas?

ExKay, i'd start a brand new thread, and be as specific as possible with your symptoms and current diagnosis.

good luck with it.
