My glove box in my 99 XK8 is broken and was like this when I purchased the car a week ago. It looks like the previous owner pulled too hard on the handle and ripped part of the plastic piece that held it in off. Now the only way to open the glove box is to mess with the metal rods in there until it opens. Can someone tell me where I can get a diagram of how this all goes together, where to get a rebuild kit, or even how to take the latch out lol?

Looking at the parts diagram in the FAQ thread in this forum (you may not be able to see it yet until you reach 10 posts) shows the door is one entire unit, and the lock cylinder can be swapped. Its going to be over $350 from the dealer, or you can start looking at salvage yards.

I have the same problem with my 2001 XK8 glove box door latch. The previous owner reported getting the car with the broken latch. I would rather not spend a fortune on a new glove box door bolster, which is in great condition, and have the latch. It seems to be missing something, and there are clear indications of break points. I just don't know what and have not had luck finding any images of the mechanism online.
Anyone have any idea of what is missing, and, if so, how I might repair this short of buying a new bolster and replacing the lock barrel in it?

Did you find a latch? My 99' has the same issue where it has been broken and I have to squeeze the mechanism by hand and align the rods to get it to open and close. I have the two pieces (the left side 'pin' is broken off). I am going to try to super glue or use contact cement to put it back together but I never have any luck with super glue.... not sure why they call it that...

 

Mine is also broken like that. I was able to procure a replacement latch (on a glovebox door with un-matching color) but cannot figure out how to attach it so it moves the rods ...properly.

super glue is probably not the best option for plastic. IME, there are 2 categories of plastic (generalizations I know) of plastic for us laymen gluing it: the ones that will react (melt and bond) to plumber's pipe glue; and the others.

I can't imagine how you could get a better bond with the first than the plumbers pipe glue, unless you need to bridge, like connecting broken ends of a rod together. In that, and all other, case(s) I'd use epoxy. Do rough up the surface to give it something to bite into. As you know even "fast drying" epoxy will take a few days to completely cure. Don't forget that in high stress situations.

I'll get some epoxy. That little 'pivot' pin is very small and right now it fits very tight into the space it broke off. I will rough it up but try to be careful to not mess up both surfaces where the fit is not tight.

Simply reach under where the latch broke off and feel for 2 (~1/4 inch) metal bars with your finger and thumb. Simply squeeze them together towards the CENTER and this will pull each bar out of their holes on the outer sides and the glove box will drop down. You may have to jiggle them towards the center as you squeeze them together simultaneously...Hope it helps! Do the same to close until you can order a replacement...At least you can now get it open and closed. ~Bella
