good buy here?
This seems like a smokin' deal (especially with that black interior), but I'm wondering why it hasn't been driven or bought since 11/2011.

I'd say that is a good price, but not an exceptional one.
I think I got a good price on mine-- 2004 with 61K for $14,500. I had been shopping a long time. I found it was near impossible to find any under $11k regardless of the year (unless the mileage was sky high), and any of the middle year (post tensioner) 2002-2006 were rare or priced very high. I am in Florida, and the supply is good in South Florida, but it seems they do not last long.
Looks like a decent deal, especially if it all checks out. Retail would be around $19K.

The black seats would be a killer here in Vegas (I'd have to dig out the old white sheepskins), and I don't like the front end as much as the earlier cars, but a 2005 for that price seems darn good. 90K+ is a bit of a risk for added maintenance. Hopefully, the PO did some of the necessary things. Do these later trannies have the same fluid requirements as the 5 sp ZF's?

The six-speed ZF transmissions "require" Lifeguard 6 fluid. That's essentially a Shell M1375.4 spec. Castrol Multi-Import ATF meets that spec, and several guys in the S-Type forum have had good success with Castrol in their S-Types over the past couple of years. When I do a drain-and-fill on the ZF in our 2005 S-Type (now at 70,000 miles), I may go with Castrol. About four bucks a quart when you can catch it on sale in our neck of the woods....

OldJag-- I have some "opinions" on the matter, and since I just finished the exercise of buying my Jag, I'll share my thoughts.
When I was looking, mostly, I could find 1997's and 1998's. But as I looked, and researched, I found the chain tensioner, and cylinder wash issues to be potentially problematic. So, I started looking for newer models in order just to avoid it. I then found the 4.2 has a little more omph than the 4.0, and the 6 speed auto to be superior to the 5 speed.... Do you see where I am going?
Anyway, I found I could get the newer car with many of the issues resolved for only a couple thousand dollars more than the older model. Also, the potential for lower mileage is greater. And finally, I actually like the looks of the later models slightly more than the older ones, albiet the cosmetic differences are slight.
In my life, I have owed several Jags and Mercedes. For the most part, people who own these types of cars do stellar service on then because they can afford to. And most people who own them don't beat on them (except for individuals who like to take them airborne and blow out the shock bushings... ahem )
