Default Great news! My 2002 XK8 has third generation tensioners!

Engine build date June of 2001 which is before factory third generation tensioner date. Decided to pull valve cover before ordering kit. I have lots of service records from 2006 forward to present that didn’t show refit so maybe done before 2006 or record just not included. All chains seem tight, but I’m no expert.

That's good news! I still need to pull a cover on my 2000 XKR. Previous owner insists they were done but had no records. Since I know it came with plastic from the factory I won't feel secure until I take a look for myself.

Don't wait around, take the cam cover off on the side without the dipstck and have a look. If they are the latest tensioners, you are all set and it will have taken you a couple of hours to check. If not, order a new pair of tensioners and replace both sides, then think about replacing the guides and primary tensioners at a later date, but the secondary tensioners are so easy to do, its crazy not to.

Yes, I've done the secondaries on every one of these I've owned so far (except the 2003 for obvious reasons). Have some valve cover gaskets on order anyway since they are leaking a bit so I'll replace those when I have them off. Hoping for the best but replacing secondaries is not a huge deal if it needs doing. I've gotten my money's worth out of those timing tools, glad I bought them a few years back.
