Default Grinding noise when in reverse

Hey everyone, I've got a 98 xk8 convertible and just the past week whenever it is put into reverse it makes a noise like metal scraping against other metal. It's fairly loud and happens for the first 15ft when backing up. Anybody know what could be the problem? Thanks

Sounds like you have metal scraping on metal. That cannot be good. Try to find a dependable trans mechanic in your area to look at it. Good luck!

I am afraid we will need more input. Does it make the noise only when moving in reverse or can you duplicate it just by putting it into gear? If you put it in reverse with your foot on the brake and give it a little throttle(very briefly of course)does the noise change or get worse? Try putting it into sport mode in the lowest gear possible and drive forward accelerate to 15 and let off the gas, do you here it in forward gears now? Answer these questions and I may have more but you will be significantly reducing the possibilties.

It just makes the noise when in reverse. I haven't been able to replicate the noise in any other gear thus far.

Read my post a little closer and answer questions. My crystal ball is acting up, so I won't be able to wing it.
