Handbrake light not working

Handbrake light not working
The ' Handbrake on ' light is working on start up but doesn't work when the handbrake is on.
I am thinking that the handbrake could also do with an adjustment as the hand comes a long way up.
Could that need for adjustment be affecting the light not coming on
