Harbor Freights Auto Lift
Chuck....I am sure you will learn to love that lift. I drilled all the points, that I thought were safe, so I could grease mine also, including the wheels under the flat part, that lifts up. I couldn't see any way of greasing the 2 floor wheels, so they got stuck. I also anchored a couple of 2x12s on each end, when the hoist was down, otherwise it will walk a bit on you, depending which end is carrying the most weight, when you lower it. I use mine every couple of days, working on my toys. It gives me a purpose, just hanging around the house. If you stop working you die, as I have discovered with my retired neighbors. My next project is spraying Rustoleum bed liner under the car, and remove the wheel liners to spray the metal in there too. In Indiana, we have this thing called rust, and I have found this to be the only way to save my toys....Good luck.....Mike
mrplow58:
I've had mine up three or four times now--mainly getting the car placed just right--but I haven't noticed it walking any, but the fact I've had to adjust the boards some could explain that. It may not be the boards moving. Today I'll go out and mark the lift on the floor to see if it's the lift or boards doing the moving--thanks for the heads up.
I can already see the love affair developing with the thing.
I have the lift in the garage at our country place and drive the XK for two weeks going and coming, then swap to the XJ. This week-end I'll swap to the XJ and see how it does on the lift. I won't get the same lifting height because of the difference in height of the cars and that damn garage door opener, but will post the results. I guess I should take some pictures so the other guys and dolls can see how it does with each car. I'll work on that.
Cheers, and thanks.

mrplow58,
I notice you had a 73 Challenger. In late 1969, I went to Ft. Benning for training and while there bought one of the first of the 1970 Challengers. It was bronze in color and had a Brown Alligator print top. When I took it back a few days later for a persistent tire leak, I mentioned to the sales rep how much I loved the car and the brown alligator top. He said Dodge didn't make a 'brown alligator top'. I took him to the shop and showed him the color and before long the whole sales dept. was looking and shaking their heads. The manager even took some pictures of it.
Not much of a story, but if the car was still around, it would be a rare find for someone. I sold it 10 months later before going to Germany. Another story as to why.

mrplow58,
Is it just that I have an xj8-"L" that it's so long, or is it the lift is just not made for sedans. I knew the inside of the L is longer in the rear seat area, but, old lost me, I didn't know it was longer on the outside compared to a regular xj8.
I put the xj on the lift today and there was just no way to position it so the lifting arms would get anywhere near the lifting points designated for the car. Width wise it's Ok, but that's it.
Your or anyone's comments.

I don't want you to think badly of me, but once I was done putting all the neighborhood kids jeeps together, and was working on my sports cars, I removed the arms, and put them in a corner of the garage. They were causing me more headaches than I thought they were worth. Right now, I just center or place the car over a little bit to the end I want to work on, and lift it with the flat plates. The arms were actually doing damage to my Porsches, and as long as a vehicle has a floor in it, it has caused me no problems. Now a buddy brought over his "Porsche" 914, without the roof, and the only thing that kept that car from splitting in 2 were the door latches. The X Type and XK8 both have gone up, without damage or drama. If I put the car a little forward or backward to work on things like the trans pan, or filling the trans, or working on the evap system in the back, I just bounce the car to make sure I am not going to become garage pizza. People can dislike my methods, but you would be amazed at what damage the dealers do with their 2 post hoists.....Going to the movies, so see ya later.....My challenger was a built 340, and plumb crazy, with aluminum slots all the way around. 70s on the front, and 60s in the rear, with chrome traction bars, with a 3400 stall. The cam was so wicked, I felt very safe with the police escort I had following me around.......Be cool......Mike
