Default Hard reset

Touching the negative battery cable to the positive for 10 seconds scares the heck out of me. Is the positive lead still connected? Is this not shorting out creating sparks? I would love to do it if someone can assure me of the process. I don't want to fry the cat

That's exactly correct, and it's even in the JTIS.

You remove the negative cable FROM THE BATTERY POST and touch the cable to the positive post. Nothing at that point is connected to the negative post, nothing sparks.

Why do you feel the need to do this?

Thanks for all the replies, I just acquired the 2000 xk8 several weeks ago.77 k on it. On the 100 mile trip home the car gave alot of warnings then cleared themselves. It has driven reasonably well altough it seems that maybe the parameters that can be reset with a hard reset might improve overall. Is there any harm in executing this manuver?

It will take a few miles to stabilize the Long Term Fuel Trim but that is automatic. Many think that the ZF 5hp24 transmission 'learns' shifts based on your driving but that is not true. It shifts based on a number of programs affected by how you drive.

You will loose radio programming as well as seat programming. Nothing that cannot be resolved in a couple minutes.

No, but it won't address what apparently went wrong. Why not read the codes instead of wiping them out?

I read somewhere on the forum about having to reprogram the tps after hard reset. I will look for it and execute this plan this weekend

You'll also need to reset the windows, and some cars (e.g. mine) will ask for the radio code.

I've done a hard reset a couple of times but have never done this.

That's the clearest advice I've seen on this subject. I too had the same concerns as those stated above. Thank you

Doing a hard reset will not clear the OBDII codes and a reset on the TPS is not necessary on a hard reset.

Be aware of the CAN failure regarding the INSTPK.

Read the TSB and determine if it applies.

Actually it will reset codes. It's worked for me the two times I needed to clear a code on my VDP after a repair.
