Exclamation Harmonic Drivetrain Buzz GONE!!! FIXED...

After 6 months of annoyance, fustration, confusion, doubt and endless brainstorming and experimentation, the Wicked Witch of the Dreaded Drivetrain Buzz is DEAD!!! Elvis has LEFT THE BUILDING!!!

Yesterday, the tech at my local indy shop noticed the rear transmission mount had cracks in the rubber mount thingys, and recomended replacing. Since it was covered by the extended warranty, I immediatly responded, "Of course!"

Mount was overnighted and installed today. I was driving the car home when I noticed after going up and down a few hills that I hadn't heard THE BUZZ. I thought, "Be still my racing heart, let us confirm this appearance of resolution." I was cresting a hill a few minutes later, upon starting down I eased off the gas...no buzz. Hmmm...another hill, no buzz...Excited, I extended the trip home and tried a few more hills, about a dozen as I recall now, no buzzes, not even a peep, no sound at all from the rear, the front or the middle of the drivetrain. It was like throwing a switch, the silence was erie, like something was wrong, but nothing was wrong because everything was all right!!!

Thanks guys. I am quite relieved this evening. It's been such a fantastic car overall since I bought it, I'm glad this dark cloud is finally gone so I can enjoy it fully now.

hmmm, any chance you kept one of the old mounts to show us the 'cracks' you speak of?

The shop still has it. I'll stop by and get some pics. I'll size them so you can see them easily...

Congrats!

And for those without a warranty the aftermarket Lincoln LS mount is a direct replacement.

Skid that is great news. Good for you.

Um so what was all the other stuff you did for?

I only ask because I had a similar thing happen a couple of years ago where almost the whole drive train was replaced but the problem was only an unbalanced drive shaft.

cheers,

jj

Thanks Skid and congratulations. I appreciate the photos. I'll recheck my own mounts but don't expect much as they've been replaced a month ago with my similar problem still occurring.

Jamjax: If my mounts show good (as they should), I'll likely take my driveshaft to a shop to have the balance checked. Thanks.

I remember when you said you had replaced all the mounts at Gaudin, so when we decided to replace the tranny mount I had absolutly no expectation that it would have any effect on the buzz, we just did it because it needed to be done. Seems like the most unusual things happen when expectations are nil.

Begger;

There may have been talks by Skid about this but if the 'buzz' did not predate replacing the transmission mounts then most likely the cause was that the drive shaft was not replaced in exactly the same position it was in before the work was done.

Sometimes just rotating the drive shaft 90 degrees will fix that.

I should clarify that it was on our Volvo V70R that we had the problems with the drive shaft.

Good luck,

jj

Most are pissed when they lose their "BUZZ",,,

But in this case I see reason to celebrate,,, and catch a "BUZZ"
