Default Headlights turn off sometimes

Driving at night the headlights will turn off sometimes. I can turn them back on by using the manual switch on the end of the turn signal stalk. After a few minutes I can turn the manual switch back to normal and sometimes the headlights will stay on ... sometimes not.

I've searched the forum some but haven't come up w anything.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Norm

PS Coming back from dinner last night the lights at one point did what my wife calls a "flipper-doodle" ... they quickly seem to go off then back on very quickly, in a flash. ?

Do you have HID lights? The ballast or bulbs going south can cause this. I had similar issue and replaced the bulbs and it fixed it. Some had to replace ballast.

best!

Are you using the automatic function for the lights, and does it happen when you have the lights manually switched on?? If on automatic only, I would look to the light sensor in the mirror (facing forward) or the connections to the sensor. If on both - automatic or manual - then it is not a mirror issue, and dsd’s suggestion is worth pursuing.

They are Xenon headlights. So, yes.

It only happens when lights are in automatic function. So it may be the sensor in mirror.

Norm, I've had the wire for the auto function work it's way loose 2 or 2 times over the years. The wire is soldered to a board at base of turn signal stalk.

Always proved to this fault by jiggling the turn signal stalk causing intermittent on off headlights.

Not too hard to fix should this turn out to be the issue.

I also had a wire break in the stalk switch, but in my case I had no lights regardless of switch position.
