Default HELP!!! Annoying rattle!

PLEASE.....
Can anyone suggest WHERE an annoying rattle in my boot/trunk/rear end might be coming from!
It isn't loud, it isn't a suspension clonk or anything like that.
It's just a continual 'rattle' that sounds like something lying in the bottom of the spare wheel well, or even a loose tool kit.
I've checked EVERYTHING: battery, spare wheel, tool kit, warning triangle, fuse box, CD stacker, floor panels; and can't find it!
I'm wondering if it might be the boot/trunk lid rattling against the car body, as there's a slight worn paint mark where the two have been rubbing, but this doesn't seem sufficient for the noise.
It occurs on even slightly uneven roads, and particularly country lane type roads - in fact, on MOST roads unless they are REALLY smooth.
It's doing my head in!!!
PLEASE..... Suggestions?????

Roy

Roy,

Two suggestions for you:

1) Check your license plate mounting, I've heard the plates rattling on some cars passing me in the parking lot, can't understand why the owner isn't driven crazy like you say.

2) I had a rattle, sounded like it was in the convertible top frame, that ended up being caused by a loose rear quarter speaker enclosure. Don't know if you have coupe or convertible, but on my convertible I could look down where the top frame folds down and see/wiggle the enclosure. Rather than taking apart the rear seat to gain access, (please forgive me!) I just folded up a piece of cardboard and shoved between the enclosure and the side panel to stop the rattle. If I ever address the rear speaker/subs like you're considering in the other threads, I'll make sure to tighten everything up properly.

Steve

ps - If you put your car details in your signature, others can more quickly come to your aid.

Many thanks for that.
Mine is a coupe, but I had a REALLY annoying rattle at the front of the dash - a small piece of card wedged in near the screen fixed it!
I'll have a peep at the rear speaker but I think its further back than that.
Roy.

Have you removed the tool tray plus spare wheel and then driven to see if the rattle is still there?

I had an annoying rattle on my XJ8L which turned out to be the extending wheel brace. The inside tube rattling against the outer tube as I was driving.

I feel your pain with the rattle. I simply cannot stand them either.

I agree with Graham. I would take out everything in the trunk, and the license plate mount and anything else that you can in the back of there to see if the rattle persists.

Good luck with finding whatever it is.

I've had two annoying rattles on my coupe.

1. The front vents, fixed by stuffing some 5/16 caulking rod between the top of the dash and the windscreen.

2. A really annoying rattle at the back that took me ages to locate. It turned out that I was looking in the wrong place and it was simply my rear window mounted brake light having come away from the window. Fixed in about 10 seconds.

That's what it sounds like.
Someone (correctl) pointed out that the only way to pick it up is to put your finger on the lower shock bush while someone else bounces the back.
You can feel the click.

How much work and money is involved with replacing this bushing?

The bushes are not expensive but you need these tools to get them out and back in.
