Default High Elevation Misfiring

2002 XKR

On a recent trip requiring steep inclines to high elevations the vehicle experienced first misfires then the engine would shut down completely.
Upon restart all functioned smoothly until another steep incline caused the same result. Vehicle ran fine at high elevation and all the way back down to sea level. Diagnostics were run at my Indy with no result.
Anyone experience the same?

I've been told that the computer checks the barometric pressure and adjusts the fuel accordingly, but only when the engine is first started. As you change altitudes the computer can only adjust within a narrow range, therefore the engine will run rich. Hence, when you restart the engine everything works good.

I've had the experience of noticing that when I'm slowly driving up a steep incline, a fuel smell can be felt in my cabin. Maybe you have a fuel leak noticed only in high elevations?

Plugged fuel filter would be a good place to start.

This can be a symptom of a failed intercooler pump on the XKR. This causes the intake air to get hot and less dense. In combination with the less dense air at high altitudes, the low density of the air becomes beyond what the ECU can compensate for. You should check the intercooler pump fuse and touch the pump with the ignition fully on and engine off to feel if there are vibrations of a running pump.
